Trim and split a short without losing the voice
Cut a 9:16 short on the timeline. Split cuts the picture and the voice together. Undo puts both back.

Trim the ends
Drag the ends of the clip on the timeline to drop a slow open or a trailing pause. If the file is over 60 seconds, this is how you get back under the YouTube Shorts limit without leaving the free editor.
The voice is its own clip under the picture so you can hear it. Trimming the picture alone would leave the voice hanging. Drag the matching voice end, or use Split so both are cut at the same moment.
Split at the playhead
Select one clip, put the playhead inside it, and click Split. The picture and the voice cut together. Undo restores both in one step. If Split asks you to select a clip, nothing is selected or the playhead is outside the clip.
That cut is how you remove a middle sentence and keep the rest. Export when the length and the line both feel finished.
